Durga Puja is close to 200 years old at this old mansion on the bank of the Hooghly in Rajgunge, Sankrail, Howrah. The Pal family gathers to celebrate this grand occasion at this palace. A striking ritual of this Puja is that sindoor khela happens on Ashtami and not Dashami. No one knows why this happens, but the women of the house dare no break the rules. Cooks come from Odisha to prepare the bhog and they have been doing this for several generations. Locals are also invited for a sumptuous meal to the mansion as well.  A large spread of offerings  are presented to the goddess for the Sandhi Puja on Ashtami.
